Craig Hartl Memorial Scholarship (Goaltenders only)

On behalf of Don and Kim Hartl of Lake Lenore, Saskatchewan, I would like to announce an opportunity for Goaltenders within the Province who will be graduating from Grade 12 this year to apply for a $1,000 Scholarship to honour the memory of their son Craig Hartl.

Craig was a young man who grew up in Lake Lenore playing hockey and the position he loved, Goaltender. Craig passed away in January, 2018 and his family wishes to honour his memory and love of a Hockey Goaltender by offering an annual scholarship of $1,000. The criteria for the Scholarship is as follows;

  • The candidate must have completed their grade 12, and they will be attending - university, college, or a trade school.
  • They must have been registered in Saskatchewan as a goalie for at least 3 years.
  • The candidate must be in good standing in the SHA.
  • The student must be an avid volunteer both in the community and in their school.
  • Please attach two (2) letters of reference with the application.
  • The scholarship will be paid out upon proof of enrollment and acceptance of their chosen post-secondary school.
  • Applicant will be required to fill out and return the application and required documents by March 1 of each year.

Attached is an application form that must be completed and forwarded to the Saskatchewan Hockey Association address listed.

The Scholarship recipient will be chosen be the Don, Kim and Cortney Hartl, Craig’s family.

Saskatchewan Development Model Scholarship Program

The Saskatchewan Development Model Partners (Saskatchewan Hockey Association; Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League; Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League; and the Western Hockey League) shall award twenty-four (24) $1,000.00 Scholarships annually to members of the SHA registered at the SMU18AAAHL and/or Junior A Level (one (1) per each SMU18AAAHL and SJHL team).

This Scholarship program does not alter a player’s ability to acquire scholarships that are made available from other member Leagues or Teams.

Players may attend any credited post secondary institution in Canada. In the case of players who have played and earned education benefits from the Western Hockey League, the SDM benefits shall be in addition to the WHL benefits and shall revert to WHL criteria, i.e. the player may attend any institution or organization in any jurisdiction allowed by the WHL.

U18 AAA League Scholarship (Adam Herold Memorial Award)

This annual award will be presented annually to the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League’s Top Defensive Defenseman who exemplifies superior leadership both on the ice and in the dressing room.

Each SMU18AAAHL Team will be able to nominate one Defenseman chosen by his teammates. All teams will receive one vote to choose the recipient.

U18 League Scholarship Criteria:

  • Defenseman on a SMU18AAAHL team
  • Leads team by being a positive example on and off the ice
  • Motivates teammates through his own play
  • Maintains a minimum 75% average in academic studies
  • Must attend a post-secondary institution (university, technological, regional college etc.) within one year after completion of Junior Hockey eligibility. The winner will receive the $1,000 scholarship once post-secondary enrollment is confirmed.

"Chuck" Heriot Memorial Scholarship

The ‘Chuck’ Heriot Scholarship fund is available annually to be awarded to a qualifying player of the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League. The fund is intended to financially assist this player in pursuit of furthering his education in a recognized Post-Secondary Educational or Trade Institution.....eg., University, Poli-Tech, Police and/or Fire Fighter Academy, etc.

Criteria:

  • The player must have completed a minimum of the equivalent of ONE season in the SMU18AAAHL. The determination of ONE season will be at the discretion of the selection committee.
  • The player must have demonstrated a high level of sportsmanship, dedication and commitment in his pursuit of excellence in the game of hockey.
  • The player must have exhibited an exemplary degree of character and leadership both on and off the ice. His participation in extra-curricular activities outside the game of hockey within his community shall be an integral part of his application.
  • The player’s record of his academic achievements should be of an exceptional standard.  The degree of his participation in school activities will indicate his work ethic and ability to multi-task while maintaining a focus on the game of hockey.
  • The player must have an unblemished record of character on the ice, in his schooling and in the community.
